Neon Genesis Evangelion: How Disgusting

Hi there!

I made a video about an old classic from the late 90s. Unfortunately, Blogger only supports videos <100MB and YouTube's being mean at the moment, so I have to link the video through Facebook.

You should be able to view it regardless of whether or not you have a Facebook account.

There's some kinda spooky stuff here, so viewer discretion/trigger warning and all that jazz.

 Also, spoiler warning!

Enjoy!

Evangelion: How Disgusting

  1. This was a really great video blog! I really commend your efforts, it was excellently produced!
The characters you chose to portray from Neon Genesis Evangelion seem like deeply flawed people, from their environment and from within. It was interesting to see the psychological principles of insecure attachment portrayed through a medium like giant fighting robots, but at the same time, your post made a lot of sense and it portrayed them well. With shinji's insecure attachment to those around him, and his need to feel accepted and loved, and Asuka's avoidant attachment, pushing away anyone who comes near her, really shows what an upbringing can do to a person. I'm sure the impending doom of humanity and the tremendous stress of having to be the people to stop it doesn't help their flaws.
Overall, great post, and very well done!

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, that impending doom is always just around the corner makes for a really interesting situation. I think the stress such a circumstance brings takes the flaws these characters have--common flaws, honestly--and really pulls them to the forefront, pushing those issues to their hyperbolic extremes.

  2. I have to agree with Justin, the video was pretty awesome, the quality in and of itself and the way you speak throughout really kept me watching. I am very unfamiliar with Neon Genesis Evangelion but it's remarkable to see how critical you are in breaking the characteristics and personalities of each character down, and I respect that you picked something that is of personal importance to you and applied what we're learning in class to it! I think you explain very well how Neon Genesis Evangelion has helped you understand other people/the characters as well as helped you understand yourself and the relationships in between.

    1. I appreciate the kind words, Kira! I'm happy you were able to follow along; Eva is a complex series, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to describe it in a way that would make sense. Good to know that wasn't an issue :)

  4. You did an awesome job with this video! You held my interest the whole time and even though I wasn't familiar with Neon Genesis Evangelion, I was able to grasp all the concepts you were talking about. I thought you did a great job going into detail with all the characteristics in both characters as you discussed what you liked and disliked about both. It was also interesting how you were able to make so many connection between yourself and the characters. When people watch movies and shows, we are constantly trying to connect with the characters and when we can't it can be infuriating. The way you connected this video to the psychology principles we are currently studying was a nice touch and I'm impressed with the blog post overall.

    1. Thanks, Sarah! I completely agree; we're always looking for pieces of ourselves in the characters of our media, and our ability to find those pieces and what those pieces look like really does define the meaning those characters have to us. I'm happy you enjoyed the post!
